Mt Carmel Irish Wolfhounds Inquiry, Questionnaire and Reference
Thank you, for inquiring about Mt Carmel and our wolfhounds. First off we would like to make it very clear that Mt Carmel is not breeding wolfhounds for a pet market. Our first goal is to breed for excellence. So what does that mean to you? We do not breed often last litter whelped September 2019. We are very selective taking care to preserve or enhance health, longevity and temperament. The first home on the list will always be our own. Puppies bred from Mt Carmel that remain with us will be pick puppies that show potential as a show prospect. Since litters can be as few as 3 puppies and as large as 12+ we will need to place the remaining puppies in good homes. If you are interested in having one of our puppies placed in your home. Please read everything, fill out our questionnaire and provide necessary references. . The following information is a brief outline on subjects of great concern to you as a prospective owner.
DELIVERY: We do not ship puppies. We are however very flexible about making arrangements for you to pick up your puppy at a location that would be half way. We want to ensure that these precious bundles are never alone. If going to a home that requires travel by air we would like the new owner to accompany the puppy on to the same flight. No one can care for your puppy better than you.
SPAY & NEUTER CONTRACTS: You must agree to have your puppy spayed or neutered at a recommended age. Unless otherwise addressed during interviews this will be required when purchasing a puppy from us.
HEALTH: We make every effort to ensure that our breeding program is such that both parents have been screened to avoid health issues that can be costly to us as well as other puppy owners. However we cannot guarantee that you will have an absolutely perfect dog. What we screen for: Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), Cardiovascular Disease, Liver Shunt and Cancer. Even with the best of care some diseases such as cancer and heart conditions cannot be avoided and cannot be guaranteed against.
FOOD: We recommend that puppies be placed on a Large Breed puppy food. Food should be 25% Protein or lower, and 1:1 Phosphorous to Calcium ratio or as close to this. Between the ages of 5 – 6 months puppies are placed on an adult food with the same requirements. BARF Diets are expectable if you are experienced with the dietary needs of a balanced diet, for a wolfhound. If the food is suitable puppies can be placed on an adult food. All of which you will need to keep us informed about.
TRAINING: You must be able to do some sort of obedience training (Basic as a minimum) Training must always be positive and fun. This breed from our experience is sensitive to anger and will not respond as you wish. You must be patient in every endeavourer yet stern. As puppies it is hard to imagine how large and powerful they will grow up to be. Start with training upon arrival and be consistent you will enjoy their company, as well as all the complements you will get on how well behaved your puppy is.
HANDLE WITH CARE: Most people are not aware of the hazards of forced exercise, jumping and playing with other larger dogs can be on an Irish Wolfhound puppy’s joints. Joints are susceptible to damage as they go from being cartilage to bone. Approx. 13 months of age all growing in height is finished and joints are not as fragile. Short periods of free play are encouraged and must be supervised. Puppies must be lifted into vehicles that require an adult dog to jump into. Stairs no more than 3 steps, anything more you will need to carry the puppy and/or block access to the puppy. Why such tough rules? This is a large breed and they are not especially agile for sometime. We don’t want you to risk injury that would require surgery or forced crating to heal.
Counter Cruising – Everything you have on your kitchen counter needs to be pushed as far away from the edge as possible. Dishtowels, rags and sponges used for dishes need to be put away or out of reach. Cleaning chemicals need to be put behind closed cabinets. Don’t leave cakes, cookies, biscuits or any foods out on the counter if you don’t want the cruiser to eat it. Read up on things dogs can eat safely if you choose to give treats. Did you know that onions, raisins, grapes, mushrooms and chocolate are poisonous to your dog? You must have a first aid kit in the house and in the car. Much of this information will be sent to you as you prepare for your new puppy’s arrival.
If you are still interested in acquiring a wolfhound puppy from a future breeding please fill out the following questionnaire along with providing necessary references. We will call or write to your references, be sure that the information is current.
